The new Ferrari Superamerica that was introduced to Europe at the 2005 Geneva Auto Show features Saint-Gobain Sekurit’s SGS LIGHTUNINGR Electrochromic Glazing technology in its glass roof.

What are the product’s advantages?

Electrochromic glass allows variable control of the sun’s energy transmission, which ranges from 1% to 15% of light transmittance and from 0.5% to 7% solar energy in the Ferrari Superamerica. According to different customers’ needs it is also possible to have a degree of control from 4% to 40% of light transmittance and from 2% to 20% solar energy.
The SGS LIGHTUNINGR laminated Electrochromic glass meets the most rigid automotive glazing requirements, and can be manufactured in complex glass curvatures, another exclusive feature of Saint-Gobain Sekurit’s technology.
The Saint-Gobain Sekurit technology is based on solid-state Electrochromic cell technology.

It is also possible to have a degree of control from 4% to 40% of light transmittance

SGS LIGHTUNINGR laminated Electrochromic glass offers the passenger the freedom of controlling the light transmission that enters the cabin through the glass:

Dark: feeling of privacy as well as protection from the sun
Clear: feeling of openness, transparency and freedom

The SGS LIGHTUNINGR laminated Electrochromic glass’ memory allows the glass to maintain the darkest setting while the car is parked (and turned off), in order to help keep the interior of the vehicle cool and in order to protect the car’s interior from the sun’s damaging UV radiation.

What are the Technical Characteristics?

  • The Electrochromic glass is clear in any setting, with no haze.
  • Depending on the glass size, a full change in light transmittance can be achieved within 30-60 seconds. This performance time is consistent over a temperature range of - 25 °C to 90 °C .
  • Only +/- 1.5V DC is required in order to operate the glass. Energy consumption is also very low : < 0.1 Wh/cycle/m2.
  • The standard design consists of two 2.1 mm glass sheets and two 0.8 mm PU films for a total glazing thickness of 5.8mm, and a total weight of 16kg for 1square meter of glass.
  • Complex curvatures can be achieved with Saint-Gobain Sekurit’s proprietary bending capabilities.
  • The glass meets all automotive OEM testing including long-term testing (Phoenix, Arizona and Bandol, France) and cycle testing (>1,000,000 color/bleaching cycles)
  • Primary applications include glass roofs, backlights, quarter glass behind “CPillars”, with other applications to follow in the future.

SGS LIGHTUNINGR laminated Electrochromic glass offers the passenger the freedom of controlling the light transmission.
